Mothers may improve children's dental health by providing a nutritious diet
Updated: 5/11/2011 9:00:03 PM

Dairy products may support tooth health In addition to encouraging proper brushing and flossing habits, moms may consider incorporating plenty of mouth-friendly foods into their family's diet to promote optimal oral health. A recent article published by the San Diego Union-Tribune highlights several of these options.

According to the newspaper, dairy products may help boost dental health by providing vitamin D, calcium, magnesium and phosphorus. These nutrients have been associated with good bone and tooth density and may help reduce a child's risk of developing cavities by neutralizing acids in the mouth.

Meal planners should also try to avoid sticky foods, the news provider suggested. This is because leftover particles from hard candies, jelly beans, cookies, raisins, dried fruit bits and rolls are not easily washed off teeth by saliva or beverages, and the longer that they remain on the tooth's surface, the more they stimulate the growth of bacteria.

Although many parents put their infants to sleep with a bottle of milk or juice, the news source suggested that babies should only be given water at night to help them avoid developing plaque buildup that can result from drinking sugary beverages.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states that 20 percent of children between the ages of 2 and 5 have untreated cavities.
