WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange recently told the media that while he was held captive in a London prison he lost a tooth while chewing on a piece of metal in his food.
"It will soon be on eBay," Assange joked to the Spanish newspaper El Paris.
The native Australian had turned himself into authorities after Sweden issued a warrant for his extradition on counts of sexual molestation and rape.
Though Assange lost his tooth through contaminated food, it may serve as a stark reminder that most people want to avoid losing any of their teeth, which is where maintaining one's dental health comes into play.
Failing to brush one's teeth at least twice every day can lead to periodontitis, a disease that affects the tissue that surrounds and supports a tooth. If the disease is left untreated, it can lead to the loss of a tooth, which in turn can leave a mouth open to other serious conditions.
The lesson? People should avoid metal in foods and strive to schedule regular dental checkups to ensure they remain in optimal dental health.
