Individuals who do not have insurance may find it difficult to pay for dental care. For those who are in need of treatment, some organizations are providing these services for free.
For example, the Greater Portland Dental Society in Maine recently treated patients for the second year in a row, free of charge, the Portland Press Herald reports. More than 120 dental professionals volunteered their time at the Dunstan Dental Center in Scarborough to provide the services.
Barry Saltz, one of the event's organizers, told the newspaper that "in a down economy, you see a lot of people who are hurting." When money is an issue, people may often neglect to receive dental care.
According to the news source, more than 600 individuals were treated during last year's event, which provided more than $100,000 in care. Although the number for this year is still unaccounted, volunteers involved with the event told the news provider that many more patients were treated.
Receiving proper dental care may be essential in keeping an overall clean bill of health. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, regular visits to the dentists can help to prevent tooth decay.
Individuals who lack dental insurance can find low-cost treatment for themselves and their families through discount dental plans.
