About 80 percent of adults in the U.S. have a form of gum disease, which could be gingivitis, according to the National Institute of Health. If untreated, this could lead to other major problems such as periodontitis. One way to prevent this from happening it to have good dental hygiene.
In a campaign to raise awareness about the serious problems that can arise from gingivitis, Crest and Oral-B have named September "National Gingivitis Awareness Month" to promote this idea.
The companies have made educational and instructional videos to teach Americans about what they can do to improve their dental hygiene. There is also a quiz that allows individuals to test their knowledge about gingivitis.
John Linder, dentist and co-founder of the congressional oral health caucus, says that gingivitis is a disease that "should not be taken lightly" and that it can lead to other health problems such as an "increased risk of heart attack and stroke."
The groups also encouraged individuals to visit their dentists and receive regular exams.
For those who lack dental insurance, there are ways to seek low-cost oral health treatments. Discount dental plans provide affordable dental care for individuals and families.
