In order to improve dental care for disabled individuals, Accessible Dental Services in Pennsylvania will provide services in a mobile dentist office specifically designed for these patients.
Several grants helped Accessible Dental build the mobile unit, which will treat more than 100 families residing in western counties of the state, according to The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. Qualified patients include those with developmental and intellectual disorders.
The nonprofit organization hopes their efforts will encourage these patients to take advantage of services, which cater to their health needs. Disabled patients are currently faced with care-related obstacles, including a lack of dental insurance.
Karen Noah, director of Accessible Dental Services, told the news source that for "people with developmental and intellectual disabilities, a dentist's chair is often so overwhelming that they can't be treated at all - even if a dentist is willing to treat them."
Dental care organizations helping Americans, including disabled patients, see a dentists on a regular basis can help lower the number of untreated individuals, as only 63 percent of people aged 18 to 64 years saw a dentist in 2007, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports.
Disabled patients who are in need of dental care and have little or no dental insurance can benefit from researching discount dental plans, which can allow them to see a dentist regularly and receive preventative treatments.
