Water fluoridation receives approval from most U.S. regions

Water fluoridation receives approval from most U.S. regions As a result of the growing number of people with little or no dental insurance, some cities are working towards adding fluoride to their water supplies. This initiative, which is supported by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and Prevention and the American Dental Association, would provide daily dental care treatments to all residents.

Despite controversy in some regions, most areas in the U.S. have already implemented or decided to move forward with the water fluoridation, according to cm-life.com.

These campaigns may lower the risk of to poor dental care in people who are unable to see a dentist on a regular basis. For example, only 63 percent of all Americans aged 18 to 64 years visited a dentist annually in 2007, the CDC reports.

William Pilmore, superintendent of the Water Department in Alma, Colorado, told the news source that "we've never had an issue come up where someone has challenged us [about] putting it in the water." He added that "the obvious benefits are for the children's teeth and cavities, and we haven't had [any] level of disagreement on [those] benefits."

In addition to community efforts towards improving dental care, people with little or no dental insurance can benefit from signing up for a discount dental plan. An inexpensive oral health program allows patients to receive dental care services without having to worry about expensive medical bills.
