Among those glad to see the recent healthcare reform bill pass is the Children's Dental Health Project, whose representatives applauded the legislation for helping to make dental plans more affordable.
The project said the legislation would help more children get coverage by requiring insurance plans offered under the State Exchange to include oral care for children, and requiring Medicare Advantage plans to pay for dental coverage, among other things.
U.S. Surgeon General Regina Benjamin has called dental disease a "silent epidemic," which mostly affects children in low-income families who lack access to quality dental care.
"With this legislation millions more children are now assured of dental coverage and access to dental care," said Dr Burton Edelstein, founder of Children's Dental Health Project. "We have ensured that children's dental coverage is as important as their medical coverage."
The Center for Disease Control and Prevention says that 22.9 percent of children between the ages of 6 and 19 have some form of untreated dental decay.
