For years some denture adhesive formulas have contained traces of zinc, though scientists have only recently found evidence that the metal can cause serious impairments to dental health such as nerve damage.
In high doses, zinc can become harmful because it inhibits the body from absorbing other minerals, thereby causing severe numbness and weakness from nerve damage, StlToday.com reports.
Denture adhesives such as GlaxoSmithKline's Poligrip and Procter & Gamble's Fixodent are known to use zinc as a bonding agent.
Starting last fall, Poligrip products came branded with a warning of the possibility of "serious health effects" which can occur from excessive use of the adhesive over a long period of time.
While one North Carolina man has claimed zinc poisoning from using Poligrip caused him to lose the complete function of his legs, dentists have said that the use of denture creams in accordance with safety instructions rarely results in health problems.
Dr Michael Cartwright of Wake Forest University told the news source, "There are many people who use denture cream who don't develop any kind of neurologic disease."
According to the American Dental Association, licensed dentists can provide tips to manage a healthy life with dentures.
