Dr Timothy Kappenman, a dentist who has serviced the area's inmates for more than two decades in his local office, told ArgusLeader.com that ahealthcare provider for a Minnesota prison has decided to bring dental care into the jails in order to save on transportation costs, bringing an end to his tenure as prison dentist.
Correct care solutions, a healthcare manager that provides services to inmates throughout the U.S., is requiring that dental care be provided to prisoners in the Minnehaha County jail in Minnesota.
The dentist estimates that each year he treated about 200 prisoners, requiring about 500 office visits.
"I looked at it as my community service," he told the news source. "It was just something I was able to help them with."
He added, "If [the jail] can find another provider that will work within the facility, that's oaky with me. I just know I can't treat them as well as in my office."
Though the issue is basically a money-saving policy shift, Kappenman's comments underscore the improved level of dental care given in dentists' offices, rather than traveling clinics or school-run programs.
