Recognizing the importance of dental care on overall health, researchers at the University of Nebraska Medical Center developed a mouthwash formula that may offer long-term protection against tooth decay.
In background research for their study, the team, led by Dr Dong Wang, found the presence of acid-producing bacteria in biofilm on a tooth's surface is a main factor in promoting tooth decay and dental cavities, HealthNewsDigest.com reports.
The mouthwash formula purports to carry antimicrobial agents directly to the tooth's surface and gradually cleanse the area of cavity-forming bacteria like Streptococcus mutans.
"The beauty of this design is the simplicity," Dr Wang told the news source. "All one may have to do is their routine oral hygiene procedure and then rinse with the formulation that we have developed."
The American Dental Association defines routine dental care as brushing twice a day, flossing daily and visiting a dentist regularly for professional cleanings and oral exams.
Studies in the field have suggested that poor dental hygiene may lead to heart attack and stroke if cavity-causing bacteria gains access to the bloodstream through bleeding gums.
