A dentist dedicated to expounding about the health benefits of dental care has released a new book detailing how gum disease can lead to serious conditions such as heart disease.
Dr Garth Petitt's new book Stop the Rot presents numerous medical studies about gum disease, as well as including a full oral hygiene program to assist people in gaining better dental health.
For years, Petitt has been an advocate for pushing the old advice "brush your teeth" further to encompass the entire mouth, arguing that while the toothbrush is important, it isn't the only thing people should be doing in their daily dental care routine.
"If people were taught from an early age to care for their entire mouth there would be less need for not only those dreaded visits to the dentist's office but would certainly affect visits to other doctors as well," said Petitt.
The doctor's personal mantra is "treat your whole mouth" and provides families an easy-to-understand program to accomplish that goal in his new book.
Children who do not maintain their dental health can develop tooth decay, which is one of the more common conditions during childhood, according to the American Dental Association.
