Root canal therapy 'helps ease dental pain'
Updated: 11/7/2008 2:00:34 PM

Root canal therapy For people who are suffering pain from inflamed or infected tooth pulp, a root canal can dramatically reduce their level of discomfort.

Many patients report that root canal therapy is a more comfortable procedure than it used to be, according to the American Association of Endodontists.

Contemporary anesthetics and techniques help patients remain at ease while they are undergoing a root canal, although for some days after the treatment the affected tooth may feel sensitive.

During a root canal, a dentist numbs the area and isolates it using a dental dam. They, they drill through the crown into the pulp chamber to clean out the diseased tissue.

After this, the dentist will reshape the area to prepare it for a filling and the area is sealed off with a rubber-like material to protect it from recontamination.

The final step of a root canal, after the area is permanently sealed, involves the placement of a gold or porcelain crown to enhance the tooth's structure and appearance.

According to the American Dental Association, the restored tooth can last for the rest of the patient's life, as long as they practice good dental care and have regular dental checkups.
