Early screenings 'benefit dental health'
Updated: 10/27/2008 2:00:21 PM

Early screenings Undergoing a childhood dental screening can help kids avoid tooth decay and protect their dental health, it has been claimed.

An article in the Le Mars Daily Sentinel explains that in Iowa, a new law states that students must receive a dental checkup before they enter kindergarten or ninth grade.

This decision was made to help prevent one of the most common childhood diseases - tooth decay.

Pain from dental health problems may mean that a child is unable to concentrate on learning.

Screenings can be performed by a dentist, hygienist, physician, physician's assistant or nurse.

"It's the most preventable kind of disease. That's why the screening is so important because the earlier you catch it the easier it will be to stop the process," dental hygienist Dawn Ericson told the news provider.

Ericson explained that high-school aged children are also required to be screened because they consume so much sugar, including soda and energy drinks.

The American Dental Association recommends that children visit a dentist for a checkup every six months, brush their teeth twice per day and floss daily for optimum dental health.
