Halloween 'does not have to threaten dental health'
Updated: 9/30/2008 4:00:35 PM

Halloween Halloween may be celebrated with bags full of candy, but it does not have to be a dentist's nightmare.

Dentist Ron Rotem of Toms River told the Asbury Park Press that there are certain steps parents can take to help maximize their children's dental health without limiting their fun.

For example, he suggested that moms and dads have a chat with their kids about their plans for all of their candy.

Parents can suggest strategies for limiting exposure to large amounts of sugar, such as keeping a small proportion and giving the rest away.

Rotem advised that there are certain sticky sweet treats that are more likely to cause damage, such as lollipops and jawbreakers, while plain chocolate candy is less risky.

He also recommended that kids consume candy directly after a meal to promote dental health, as this is the time when saliva is already cleaning away acids from the mouth.

"Keep in mind that eating candy between meals is a bad idea because of the extra acid it generates in the mouth," he told the news provider.

Guidelines such as these should encourage children to use moderation and practice good dental hygiene habits, Rotem added.

Statistics compiled by the U.S. Census Bureau reveal that around 40 million trick-or-treaters celebrate Halloween each year.
