An increasing number of people have been turning to dental implants to enhance and repair their smiles.
An article in the Sacramento Bee reveals that more people have been requesting implants, with 5.5 million procedures completed in one year, according to the most recent figures from the American Dental Association.
One of the attractions of dental implants is how closely they resemble real teeth. Patient Penny Hancock told the news provider that the procedure "give you back your teeth - literally."
"The teeth match perfectly, line up and you don't have to take them out at night and clean them," she added.
In fact, dental implants consist of false teeth supported by titanium tooth roots. The implants fuse with a person's jaw bone, which means that loss of bone is "generally not a problem," according to the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons.
However, dental implants may not be suitable for everyone. Those whose dental health is otherwise good and how have lost only one tooth are most likely to be approved for the procedure.
Meanwhile, children whose bones are still developing are usually advised to wait until their jaw has finished growing before receiving an implant.
Discount dental plans may allow patients to save between 10 and 60 percent on many procedures.
