A 3D imaging system known as SureSmile has been shortening the amount of time that some patients need to wear braces, according to a Virginia orthodontist.
Dr C. William Dabney told the Midlothian Exchange that the technology has reduced the length of people's orthodontic cycle by up to 40 percent.
The SureSmile process begins by using an OraScanner to take hundreds of photographs of a patient's teeth and gums, which are used to build a representative 3D model.
Dr Dabney explained that the system allows him to manipulate individual teeth to achieve proper alignment.
"Each tooth has special needs, so it's important to get them to their exact location," he told the publication.
After a virtual representation of the patient's mouth has been produced, a SureSmile robot creates an elastic memory wire that guides teeth into place.
Approximately 250 dentists and orthodontists across the U.S. use this type of technology to straighten people's teeth.
In addition to faster treatment, SureSmile claims that patients feel less pain from this treatment than they do from conventional orthodontics.
