Infant dental care 'is essential'
Updated: 8/28/2008 4:00:43 PM

Parents should make their child's dental health a priority from a very early age, a pediatric dentist has cautioned.

Dr Laila Hishaw told Tucson's KOLD News that babies should make their initial visit to a dentist before their first birthday.

She said that many parents are not aware of this recommendation and do not bring their children in until problems have arisen.

"Sometimes when I have a three-year-old come in, the decay is so extensive that we have to put them to sleep under general anesthesia," Hishaw told the news provider.

Among the other advice offered by the pediatric dentist is that parents should never share utensils with their young children, because the practice transmits cavity-causing bacteria.

She also warns moms and dads not to put their child to bed with a bottle of milk or juice, to wean them from a bottle by 12 months and to make sure they wipe their gums and mouth after every feeding.

Another dentist, Dr Fred Eck, recently advised that children should get their teeth checked every six months.
