Kids need a dental check-up 'every six months'
Updated: 8/21/2008 12:01:20 PM

Children should go to the dentist to have their teeth examined twice per year, an expert has recommended.

Writing in the Marco Eagle, Dr Fred Eck says that many parents do not send their kids for check-ups because they think "their baby teeth are just going to fall out anyway."

However, he cautions that "this couldn't be further from the truth," as baby teeth enable proper jaw growth and help determine the amount of space allotted for adult teeth to occupy.

At these regular dentist visits, many children may benefit from topical fluoride treatments, particularly those who drink unfluoridated bottled water instead of tap water, Eck claims.

Kids who drink sugary beverages such as soda, sports drinks or fruit juice should also have these treatments, he adds.

As for when a child's dental visits should begin, Eck recommends that parents bring them in when they are between 24 and 36 months old.

According to the Mayo Clinic, children usually begin losing their baby teeth when they are around six years old.
