A new tool that uses sound waves to cut through bone is giving patients an alternative to traditional dental surgery.
Piezosurgery utilizes 60,000 sound waves per second to penetrate bone while protecting nerves, vessels and soft tissue, WABC-TV reports.
It can be used as part of treatment related to gum disease and cavities, as well as playing a part in other dental surgeries such as crown lengthening.
Dentist Joseph Kravitz of the Center for Dental Health told the news source that the procedure offers a less painful alternative to scalpel-based surgery.
"Just as an opera singer will sing and crack glass, this is like the opera singer for surgery and it can crack your bone without any pain, without any discomfort, without any bleeding," he explained.
Kravitz said that the Compendium of Continuing Education in Dentistry has recognized that Piezosurgery offers a more precise and less invasive cut than traditional methods using a scalpel.
