Dental extractions 'not always the answer'
Updated: 6/26/2008 12:00:42 PM

Having a problem tooth removed may seem like the perfect solution, but a dental expert has urged people to think twice before having their teeth pulled.

Marcine Hays, patient education coordinator at Oak Park Family Dental Care in Oregon, told the State Journal that having missing teeth can cause a number of problems.

Firstly, she notes that it can cause the surrounding teeth to move into the gap, creating an unaligned smile. In addition, the teeth may take on a longer and darker appearance as the root is exposed.

This is not the only unsightly possible side-effect - Ms Hayes states that if several teeth are removed, the jawbone begins the recede, which can give the face a "sunken appearance".

In addition, when a number of teeth are taken out, "your days of eating steak, salad and tacos are over", she says.

This can lead to nutrition problems as healthy raw fruits and vegetables often have to be cut out.

If a tooth falls out or is knocked out, it can be possible to re-implant it if it is kept intact, according to dentists. Experts suggest avoiding touching the tooth by its root and placing it in milk immediately.
