Temporary dentures could improve a person's smile as well as their overall health, a study from the Academy of General Dentistry (AGD) has found.
Its research suggested that temporary dentures are not only an economically feasible option for when people are waiting for permanent dentures, but can also improve the look of smiles and make the patient feel happier.
The report notes that over 20 million teeth are extracted every year in the US, leaving people with unsightly gaps in their mouth. In a survey of AGD members, 86 per cent reported that their patients felt embarrassed by their tooth loss.
Laura Murcko, a spokesperson for the AGD, said: "A great smile can make great, lasting impression, boost a person's self-esteem and confidence as well as improve their overall health."
"Unsightly gaps in the mouth do not have to be part of a person's permanent appearance," she added.
Temporary dentures offer an effective solution, Ms Murcko claimed, allowing patients to eat regular foods and giving the appearance of a full set of teeth.
Recently, in a bid to tackle the problem of dentures interfering with a person's ability to speak clearly, scientists in France developed dentures fitted with sensors to reveal the tongue's movement during speech.
