Lost a tooth? Reach for the milk...
Updated: 4/17/2008 10:00:25 AM

The majority of people believe that if their tooth gets knocked out, they have lost it for good.

According to the American Dental Association (ADA) however, that is not necessarily the case. Some quick thinking and a carton of milk could save the day.

CBS News' medical correspondent Dr. Emily Senay looked at the various common first aid mistakes that people make, one of which is to abandon a tooth that has been knocked out or to try and clean it.

The ADA stresses that it is possible in some cases for the tooth to be replanted into the mouth of its unfortunate owner, but it must not be cleaned or handled by the root.

Instead, the best thing to do is pick the tooth up quickly by the crown - which is the edge used for chewing - and immerse it in whole milk, before heading off as fast as possible to the dentist or emergency room.

The news provider reports that "the faster you get there, the better the chances the tooth can be successfully re-implanted in your mouth".

If the tooth cannot be saved, then dental implants are a popular replacement. New research has discovered that coating an implant with a bone-like material, rather than titanium which has traditionally be used, will allow it to be incorporated into the jaw better.
