Improve a pet

There have been a lot of articles this February about how to keep a pet's teeth healthy, in honor of National Pet Dental Health Month. Unfortunately, many dogs and cats are already in poor oral health because their owners do not understand how to care for the teeth of their furry friends. Recently, Dog Channel offered some tips for how to improve a pet's dental health.

The news source spoke to Rene Carlson, president of American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), who said that by age 2, an estimated 80 percent of dogs have some form of periodontal disease, and that this is the most common health problem that veterinarians find in pets.

Dog Channel says that first, a dog should get a yearly dental check-up. Just like people, animals need to be seen by dental health professionals in order to ensure that their teeth are healthy. Second, the news source said that dogs' teeth need to be brushed regularly.

"You don’t brush your teeth only once a year, do you? No, and your dog shouldn’t either. You should brush your dog’s teeth at several times a week; every day is better. They make standard, battery-operated, and finger brushes for dogs; use whatever type you and are dog are most comfortable," according to the information provider.

The AVMA states that although most people think their dog or cat has bad breath, if a person notices that Spot or Fluffy's mouth is emitting a particularly bad odor, that may be a sign of a more serious health problem.
