A New York dentist claims to have perfected a technique for performing dental implants in one visit.
With the help of periodontal surgeon Dr Bobby Ghalili, Dr Jan Linhart can set a temporary crown on an implant in a day, giving a patient a quick solution to the problem of a missing tooth.
The process involves a number of steps, beginning with the drilling of an entrance hole into the bone where the implant is to be place, although this is unnecessary if the missing tooth has been recently extracted.
Then, a titanium implant is screwed into the whole to act like a natural tooth root. Bone should then grow around the implant, which can be assistant with a graft. Once this has happened, a crown can be placed on the dental implant, which should look and feel like a real tooth.
In related news, researchers at the School of Odontology at the University of Granada announced recently that they have successfully used growth hormones in oral implantology to regenerate the bone and speed up the integration between the bone base and dental implant.
