Sometimes, lack of dental insurance or a discount dental plan can have serious consequences. For example, ABC News reported on a 24-year-old man who died in 2011 because he had a dental infection spread to his brain because he could not afford a trip to the dentist or medications to treat it. Now, a woman is facing criminal charges for ignoring her son's dental health.
According to the Morning Call, a Pennsylvania news source, a 42-year-old woman was recently charged with reckless endangerment and endangering the welfare of a child for failing to seek treatment for her child's decaying molar. A dentist told social service caseworkers that the boy was in desperate need of a root canal.
"If a root canal was not conducted, [the son] was at risk for further pain, inability to eat, inability to sleep and possible infection," court records state, according to the Morning Call.
The woman was released on $10,000 bail. This is not the first time that a parent has been criminally charged with ignoring the dental health of a child. In February, a man was sentenced to one to two years in prison for ignoring his 14-year-old son's dental issues, which eventually led to the boy pulling his own teeth out with a pair of pliers.
