Discount dental plans can be beneficial to anyone, because they are often more affordable than purchasing individual dental insurance and provide people with the quality care they need to avoid oral emergencies. However, these plans are particularly important for older individuals on Medicaid who may be watching their dental funding get slashed.
For example, the Peoria Journal Star, an Illinois news source, recently published an article about how older individuals in Tazewell County are struggling to find affordable dental care since Illinois stopped paying for all but emergency dental care for adults in the Medicaid program.
This has led to many elderly adults showing up in emergency rooms for dental work.
"What we're seeing, unfortunately, is more individuals on Medicaid coming to our office with dental pain and infection," physician Dennis Caffery told the Star Journal. "Other than giving them antibiotics and pain pills, we don't have many options."
According to Oral Health Watch, it is far more expensive to treat a dental condition once it has become emergent than in it's early stages. This is a financial burden not only for the individuals who are in pain, but also for taxpayers
