Individuals who do not have dental insurance should look into discount dental plans to help them gain access to affordable dental care, especially if they have children. According to a new study conducted by researchers at the Ostrow School of Dentistry at the University of Southern California, tooth pain and poor oral health can put children at a major disadvantage in the classroom.
Researchers found that children who reported experiencing tooth pain were four times more likely to have a low grade point average than those who said they were free of oral discomfort. Furthermore, kids with dental problems are likely to miss school because of them.
"On average, elementary children missed a total of 6 days per year, and high school children missed 2.6 days. For elementary students, 2.1 days of missed school were due to dental problems, and high school students missed 2.3 days due to dental issues," said researcher Roseann Mulligan, chair of the school’s Division of Dental Public Health and Pediatric Dentistry.
These findings highlight the need for discount dental plans and other initiatives that help children and adults alike gain access to affordable dental care.
