Many Americans have been avoiding their regular trip to the dentist because they are struggling to find affordable dental care. This is a major problem, considering that dental health is about way more than just teeth, it's also a part of overall well-being. Recently, former United States Surgeon General David Satcher, M.D. released a statement calling for Americans to put a greater emphasis on their dental health, and dentists have been applauding the doctor's words, and are encouraging people to heed them.
Gordon Austin, D.D.S., recently responded to Satcher's statement by making his own observations on the importance of dental health,
"Dr. David Satcher continues his heroic efforts, begun during his tenure as United States Surgeon General, to raise awareness about oral health as an important part of overall health," said Autstin. "But like so many of the health miseries facing Americans, like obesity, type 2 diabetes, heart disease and many cancers, oral disease is largely preventable."
The dentist added that some problems, such as impacted wisdom teeth or jaw tumors, are not preventable, but by and large most dental issues can be avoided by brushing, flossing and visiting the dentist regularly.
