According to the American Diabetes Association (ADA), there are links between poor gum health and periodontal disease, or inflammation of the gums, and diabetes. In a recent study by the Academy of General Dentistry (AGD), diabetic patients were found to be a key category in need of communicating better with their dentists, as poor gum health can signal advanced stages of diabetes and certain medications can interact with medications used by dentist practices. With the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) claiming that more than 18 million Americans are considered to be diabetic since 2002, dentists believe that keeping up a healthy dental routine can have a significant impact on controlling diabetes.
