Discount dental plans are a smart option for anyone who wants dental care at an affordable cost. These plans may be a particularly good choice for adults on Medicaid, since The Huffington Post recently reported that states across the U.S. are making cuts to the dental benefits offered to these individuals. This is leaving many low-income adults with no way to pay for teeth cleanings, fillings and dentures.
Cory Curtis, a spokesman for Washington Governor Chris Gregoire, told the Post that the cuts were made because dental care was one of the few areas of Medicaid where funding could be reduced. However, dental health professionals are concerned.
"We're very concerned and very dismayed at the same time," said William Calnon, D.D.S., president of the American Dental Association. "You're talking about a population that, if they do not have Medicaid [covering their dental care], will try their best to do without."
According to Forbes Magazine, for about $100 a year, discount dental plans can give a person access to a range of dentists who are willing to provide care for reduced fees, and they may be better options than purchasing dental insurance.
