In this tough economy, dental health professionals are experiencing financial woes right along with their patients. Medscape reports that a recent study found that the U.S. dentists' incomes have been dropping steadily since 2005. Despite this, Career Cast recently named dental hygienist as the best job that does not require a college degree.
The Los Angeles Times reported on the finding, and said that dental hygienists have a surprisingly high starting salary, and a person does not have to go to college to become one.
"[Dental hygienist] salaries that start at $45,000 on average and that can grow 109 percent at the top level. Through 2020, the number of such jobs is expected to surge nearly 38 percent," according to the news source.
Furthermore, as many rural areas continue to struggle to gain access to dentists, hygienists may play a growing role in providing basic dental care. The news source concluded by stating that with no college degree, the average entry-level pay is $28,350. These individuals earn $79,150 on average during their final working years.
