May is National Smile Month, when dental health professionals work together to promote proper dental care and help Americans get the winning smile they deserve. In honor of this occasion, the National Children's Health Oral Health and Philips Sonicare are teaming up to create the Tomorrow's Smile program, which helps at-risk teens gain access to dental care.
The program works with dentists to provide dental care and education to teens in underprivileged areas. The hope is that these teens will then return the favor by teaching the younger children in their community about the importance of dental health.
"Many people don't understand the full impact of a smile," said Ann Demarais, Ph.D., founder of First Impressions. "A healthy, confident smile has a tremendous impact on how people are perceived, as well as how they interact with others."
Researchers have found that people who smile create more favorable first impressions and come off as more approachable than those who do not. Of course, no one wants to smile and reveal a mouthful of decaying teeth, which is why it's important that people have access to dental care.
