Dental health is important for everyone, but especially children. According to the American Dental Association, baby teeth are as important as adult ones, and they serve the added purpose of helping children learn how to chew and speak properly. Recently, The Daily Aztec, a San Diego State University (SDSU) news source published an article discussing how students are reaching out to refugee children in the area to teach them about dental health.
San Diego is home to the second largest refugee community in the country. According to the information provider many of these children refugee families from the Middle East. The students are part of a group called Health and Dental Outreach that works to ensure these kids know about dental health.
"We want to start early to prevent any danger to their dental health," said Health and Dental Outreach member, Claudia Hammi, quoted by the news source. "We often give presentations to kids that have absolutely no knowledge of the basics."
Many of the volunteers speak Arabic, which helps them reach the children. The group was awarded the SDSU President’s Leadership Fund, worth $15,000, which was used to buy books and toothbrushes.
