One of the reasons why many Americans are struggling to maintain their dental health is that people in rural areas have a harder time gaining access to dentists. This is because few dental care professionals are willing to open practices in certain areas, forcing many individuals to travel far to get the care they need.
In response to this problem, U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Katherine Sebelius announced that rural healthcare providers across the nation will receive more than $10.4 million to help them provide better care to their communities.
"Access to quality and affordable health care should not be determined by where you live," said Secretary Sebelius. "These grants are a continuation of our effort to ensure that rural providers are able to meet the needs of their communities."
Health Resources and Services Administration administrator Mary Wakefield, Ph.D., R.N. added that rural communities are the ideal place for developing innovative solutions that can help improve healthcare in other underserved areas. She believes this is an opportunity for rural areas to show that quality healthcare can be delivered anywhere in the U.S.
