Many Americans are struggling to gain access to oral care, as more individuals find themselves without dental insurance. Tragically, it is not just adults who are experiencing dental health problems, but children as well.
Recently, ABC World News reported that more than 16 million American kids are going without dental care, which resulted in a major surge of young patients in emergency rooms with blackened teeth.
"People think just because you have insurance that you're going to have access to care - which is not the whole story," said pediatric dentist Falguni Patel. "They're very few pediatric dentists that accept Medicaid in this area, so these children have nowhere to go even if they do have insurance. It's a big problem."
In November, PBS spoke to dental health professionals who said that the government has identified more than 4,500 areas in America where there aren't enough dentists. Individuals without insurance should look into discount dental plans that can help connect them to an oral care professional.
