Recently, there was major news in the dental industry when a study published in the American Cancer Society suggested that people who received frequent dental X-rays in the past have an increased risk of developing brain tumors. Recently, the Academy of General Dentistry (AGD) released a statement to set the record straight about the association between dental X-rays and cancer.
According to the AGD, the study's findings are not applicable to modern dentistry because the researchers examined outdated radiographic techniques.
"It is regrettable to think that an article based on outdated technology could scare the public and cause them to avoid needed treatment," said AGD president Howard Gamble, D.M.D. "With the radiography techniques in use today, the amount of radiation exposure is reduced and more controlled than it was in years past."
Gamble added that neglecting oral health has serious implications, and radiographs play an important role in improving dental health. He encouraged individuals to not let this study keep them from seeking dental care.
The AGD states that they support further research on any correlations between modern radiographs and cancer.
