Millions of Americans do not have access to dental care. A recent article in The New York Times suggested that one reason that some U.S. residents are not getting the dental treatment they need is that there are not many dentists who are willing to practice in rural areas, leaving people who live in these places with hundreds of miles between themselves and a dentist.
In response to this, Carroll County News, an Arkansas news source, reported that the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences is working to develop its own dental school.
"An Arkansas school of dentistry likely will spread out the distribution of dentists throughout the state. Now, most dentists are clustered in the state's eight most populous counties and five rural counties in Arkansas have no dentist at all," according to the news source.
The information provider added that Arkansas is one of 14 states without its own dental program. Hopefully, if this dental school comes to pass, residents in this state will have easy access to oral care professionals.
