While most people know that eating too many sugary foods and drinking too much soda can contribute to poor dental health, many individuals may not realize the foods out there that can help keep the mouth happy. Recently, the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry developed recipes in a free e-booklet called Recipes for a Healthier Smile, which informs people of foods that will improve their smile.
The book was developed by nutritionist Karen Krchma and Shawn Frawley, D.D.S., who created lists of foods that promote healthy gums, prevent enamel loss and help whiten teeth.
For healthy gums, the experts recommend eating wild salmon, which contains omega-3 fatty acids that may reduce inflammation. To prevent enamel loss, Krchma and Frawley suggested broccoli, which has iron which may create a protective barrier that can shield teeth from acidic foods and drinks.
People who want whiter teeth may want to get some pineapple and foods that contain vitamin C, which can act as natural whitening agent.
Finally, the experts recommended consuming shiitake mushrooms, which may help prevent oral bacteria from creating dental plaque.
