The American Dental Association (ADA) states that there are many cosmetic procedures that people can do to improve the look of their smile. For example, tooth whitening, enamel shaping and bonding for chipped or broken teeth are all common ways that people can enhance the appearance of their teeth.
While all of the procedures the ADA listed are safe when performed by a dentist, there are also some radical things out there that people have been doing to their teeth that may damage their dental health. Recently, the Huffington Post published an article discussing some of these frightening trends in dentistry.
First, the news source cited an episode of America's Next Top Model where a young girl wanted to have the spaces between her teeth widened, which could cause problems with the jaw.
Next, the Post said that some people have been getting their teeth reshaped to appear more like fangs, which can be dangerous and costly.
"We strongly caution people against altering their teeth because of a fad," Matthew Messina, a Cleveland-area dentist and American Dental Association advisor said in a press release, quoted by the news source. "Filing teeth weakens tooth structure and, if the person later changes his mind, restoring teeth to their natural shape can be costly."
Finally, while this is probably out of the price rage of the average Joe, some celebrities like Kanye West have had diamonds added to their teeth. Along with being incredibly expensive, the diamonds can wear away at tooth enamel, especially if food gets stuck on to them.
