Not having dental insurance can make it difficult to afford even basic oral care. Recently, the Wichita Eagle, a Kansas news source, reported that one local resident needed a root canal, but since she did not have insurance it would cost her $2,000, a price she couldn't afford.
Kansas hospitals reported more than 17,500 visits to emergency rooms for dental health issues in 2010. This figure suggests that many residents are having difficulty affording a trip to the dentist, and are waiting to address a dental problem until it becomes so painful they have to go to the ER.
In response to this, the Kansas Health Foundation is launching a new public awareness campaign called Truth About Teeth, which highlights the importance of oral care.
"In [the campaign] the foundation will use words such as "decay" and "gross" plastered across mouths on billboards and in other ads to get people's attention and give them some fact about the state's dental condition," according to the Eagle.
Reuters estimates that 45 million Americans do not have dental insurance. This population should consider looking into discount dental plans, which help people gain access to affordable dental care.
