In the past few months, many reports have shown that there is an alarming number of people going to emergency rooms for oral care problems. For example, last year, 83,000 California residents visited the ER for oral pain, and Florida residents made 115,000 visits for dental health problems.
Usually, unless there is a dentist in the ER, physicians will not treat dental problems, but just give people medications for their pain. This means that the underlying oral issue still exists.
Recently, Joseph Marvizi, D.D.S., a California dentist, released a statement encouraging people to pay attention to their dental health and visit the dentist often, since minor oral problems can result in more serious issues that lead people to the ER.
The dentist pointed out that gingivitis, periodontal disease and gum disease can all be easily taken care of in the early stages, but if left untreated these conditions may require expensive and painful procedures.
"Biannual dental visits are indispensable. Hygienists provide comprehensive cleanings that help fight bacteria and prevent tooth decay, and dentists will check for latent oral problems" concluded Marvizi.
