People give many reasons for not paying attention to their dental health. For example, a Jan. 2012 Consumer Reports survey found that many individuals don't go to the dentist due to the steep costs, and only one-third of respondents were brushing and flossing when they should because they don't have the time.
These are not valid excuses, as there are many discount dental plans that can help people gain affordable access to the care they need, and brushing and flossing only takes a few short minutes. Recently, Occupational Health and Safety, an online magazine, reported on a survey by the American Heart Association (AHA) that found that 25 percent of Americans are not practicing a healthy oral care routine.
This means that 25 percent of all U.S. residents are not brushing at least twice a day and flossing once a day. This highlights the need for greater awareness of the importance of dental health, which has been associated with overall health.
Furthermore, the study found that only 12 percent of Americans have healthy habits such as eating right, exercising and regularly caring for their teeth.
“Whether it is simply adding a 30-minute brisk walk to your day, eating a few more fruits and vegetables with your meals, balancing your calories and physical activity to achieve a healthy body weight, or creating routine oral care habits - it all contributes to an overall healthier lifestyle,” said Tracy Stevens, M.D. AHA spokesperson, quoted by the news source.
