How brushing the teeth can lead to exercise  

Reporter Judy Kroeger of The Daily Courier, a Philadelphia news source, has been participating in a 10-week challenge to get in shape and become healthier. This week, the focus of her challenge was improving her dental health.

According to Kroeger, a healthy mouth promotes overall fitness.

"Good dental hygiene leads to a lovely smile, which boosts self-confidence. Self-confidence leads to motivation, which encourages healthy behaviors like eating better, exercising, feeling positive and getting enough sleep," said Kroeger, quoted by the news source.

While that may sound like a stretch, Kroeger said that when she brushes and flosses her teeth in the morning, exercising and eating right come easier throughout the day. This is because she has already done something to contribute to her well-being, so it makes her want to do more.

The Mayo Clinic states that dental care directly impacts overall health. It's important to keep the bacteria in the mouth in check so that it does not get out of control, enter the blood stream and contribute to the development of disease.
