Dentists work to teach kids about dental care

In honor of National Children's Dental Health Month, many dentists have organized events aimed at teaching young people about the importance of maintaining oral health. Recently, for example, the Shreveport Times reported on how Louisiana dentists and dental hygienists are teaming up to educate kids about oral care.

The news source reports that students from a local third-grade class were recently given X-rays, flouride treatments and sealants, which give their teeth a protective covering, all while being taught about the importance of dental health. Many of the students were unable to see a dentist regularly due to financial concerns.

According to dentist Brian Basinger, a child's dental health can impact their whole lives.

"Painful toothaches distract children from their school work and even make it difficult for them eat, sleep and pay attention in school," said Basinger, quoted by the news source. "We believe that children shouldn't have to suffer simply because their families cannot afford healthcare; that is why we support and participate in this worthwhile event."

Consumer reports states that 80 percent of tooth decay in America occurs in children. This highlights the need for young people to have access to affordable dental care.
