More than 1 million Americans and Canadians are wearing braces each year, according to the American Association of Orthodontists. Individuals of all ages are getting these corrective treatments, but according to New Jersey orthodontist Patrick Cuozzo, the most effective way to get straight teeth is to get braces earlier rather than later.
According to the oral health expert, individuals who get braces when they are young are more likely to have a more structurally appealing mouth than those who postpone the procedure into adulthood. Correcting crooked teeth earlier can lessen the total treatment time needed, improve overall health and promote proper bone growth.
Cuzzo suggests that when a child's permanent teeth have developed, parents should bring them to an orthodontist in order to identify future dental health problems and guide teeth in the proper direction. The dental care provider added that seeking corrective treatment early can also reduce the risk of future complications, such as the need for tooth extractions or impacted teeth.
Finally, Cuzzo recommended that people of all ages who are seeking orthodontic treatment do their research to make sure they are going to a qualified and affordable doctor.
