People should seek treatment for common jaw disorder

Temporomandibular joint and muscle disorder (TMD/TMJ), is a common cause of pain and dysfunction in the jaw. Although this condition can be treated by a dental health professional, only two-thirds of the population that experiences this disorder seeks help, according to a study conducted by the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research.

Recently, Mark Kleive, D.D.S., explained a little more about this condition, including effective ways to treat it.

"There are many treatment options, but oral appliances such as bite guards can be a straightforward solution to relief from jaw pain," said Kleive. "For some patients, they are an ideal solution because they are custom crafted for each individual and generally can provide rapid relief from symptoms."

Kleive added that many people go years without being diagnosed with TMD/TMJ, since the symptoms such as headache, tension and muscle tenderness, can be associated with other conditions. The disorder can be caused by teeth grinning, stress, chronic illness and other factors.

Individuals who experience pain in their jaw accompanied by a headache may want to seek out their dental care provider.
