If parents want to ensure that their child is in proper dental health, they may want to make sure that kids understand some of the basic facts and myths about teeth. Recently, Barista Kids ran a true-or-false quiz created by Natasha Mathias, D.M.D, which is designed to test parents' knowledge of dental health so that they can pass the information on to their children.
The first statement in the quiz was "cavities are contagious." According to Mathias, this is true, since cavities are caused by bacteria and can be passed from person to person through sharing food, utensils and contact.
The New York Times reported on this fact in May of 2011.
"Infants and children are particularly vulnerable to [the cavity-causing bacteria], and studies have shown that most pick it up from their caregivers - for example, when a mother tastes a child’s food to make sure it’s not too hot," according to the Times.
The next statement on Mathias' quiz was can juice and other drinks we give kids cause cavities. This is also true, since juice and many other beverages for children contain sugar, a leading cavity-causing substance.
Finally, the last statement was "kids can brush their own teeth." This is false, as most children need supervision until past kindergarten.
