A study conducted in Taiwan last year found an association between regular professional teeth cleanings and a reduced risk of heart attack and stroke. In response to this, Steven Flicker, D.D.S., a dental health professional in Chicago, explained the importance of visiting the dentist regularly and the connection between oral care and overall health.
"Routine cleanings by a licensed dental hygienist include much more than polishing a patients teeth. The hygienist removes hardened deposits on the teeth and below the gum line that brushing cannot remove. They also check for decay and any oral abnormalities that may be present," said Flicker.
According to the Mayo Clinic, the health of the mouth provides clues to the overall health of the body. Bacteria that forms in the mouth can usually be kept under control by regular brushing and trips to the dentist. If left unchecked, however, this bacteria can grow and cause oral infections that can disrupt the natural balance of bacteria in the body.
Unfortunately, surveys have found that many Americans are skipping regular trips to the dentist because they do not have dental insurance. These individuals should consider getting an affordable dental plan to help them gain access to oral care.
