Holidays make people more smile-conscious

Along with making a resolution to improve oral health, some individuals may be considering getting a new smile to start off 2012. A survey conducted by the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD) found that more than 99 percent of U.S. residents believe that a smile is an important social asset. It also discovered that 50 percent of Americans are unsatisfied with the appearance of their teeth.

According to James Salazar, D.D.S. and Bradley Ross, D.D.S., of Mission Trails Dentistry in California, cosmetic awareness seems to increase during the holidays as everyone prepares for parties and gatherings. The dentists have seen a boost in people getting smile makeovers this month to improve their self esteem.

"During the holidays, people always feel that they want to look their best around friends and family. A nice smile radiates health and confidence." said Ross.

Of course, while many cosmetic dental procedures can cost a great deal of money, it doesn't take a lot of cash to maintain a healthy smile. Brushing, flossing and visiting the dentist regularly can help a person bring out the best in their pearly whites.
