The study found that poor oral health is costing Australia an estimated $1.3 billion a year in loss of productivity. Study authors said that an inability to afford care and a lack of programs targeting the poor are the reasons behind this problem.
Researchers estimate that at least one million days of work and 600,000 school days are missed each year due to dental problems. These issues most likely could be avoided if people paid closer attention to their dental health and visited the dentist more regularly.
Furthermore, the study found that adults on low incomes were 60 times more likely to not have their teeth than those who make a decent salary. For those without dental insurance in this country, there are many affordable dental plans that can connect individuals to oral care professionals.
